Attendance Central
Learner success is tied to regular attendance. When learners are absent, they miss opportunities to learn, develop skills to become good citizens, and complete their coursework required for graduation. Winfree Academy Charter Schools encourages learners to attend school both every day and on-time.
DID YOU KNOW?
TEXAS STATE LAW
Texas State law requires learners to attend school each day that instruction is provided. A parent/guardian commits an offense under Texas Education Code Sec. 25.093 when a learner accrues 10 or more unexcused absences or parts of the days (i.e. tardies or early
sign outs), This offense is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by fine. Fines assessed are $100 for a first
offense, $200 for a second offense, $300 for a third offense, $400 for a fourth offense, and $500 for a fifth or subsequent offense. The
minimum fine for 10 unexcused absences is $4,000.
FUNDED BASED ON ATTENDANCE
Schools in Texas are funded based on learner attendance, not enrollment. In other words, Winfree Academy does not
receive funding for each day learners are absent from school.
TRUANCY PREVENTION MEASURES
Winfree Academy is committed to partnering with our families to strengthen the attendance of its learners. Winfree Academy will take
the following steps to notify our parents of learner absences -
- Daily Attendance Clerk phone calls
- Daily Skyward Emails
- Daily School Messenger Phone Calls
Should learners begin to accrue unexcused absences, we will implement the following Truancy Prevention Measures -
Three Unexcused Absences - Warning letter to parent/guardian
Five Unexcused Absences - Warning letter and conference with parent/guardian
Seven Unexcused Absences - Referral to Truancy Tribunal and/or remediation for time missed
Ten Unexcused Absences - Referral to Truancy Court (Ages 18 and Under) OR recommendation for withdrawal of adult learners (Ages 19 and
over)
How to Report an Absence:
Parents/guardians are required to submit a school absence note to share a reason for an absence. Failure to provide any note within 3
school days of the learner’s return to school may result in an unexcused absence. Some absence types will require that
additional documentation be provided for campus consideration.
